Below are descriptions of these organizations, outlining opportunities for musicians, performance types and frequency, and their community impact in Cache Valley.
The Cache Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is Cache Valley's premiere community symphony and performs 2-3 concerts annually. Originally a small string ensemble called the Cache Chamber Orchestra, CSO has evolved with strict audition requirements, engaging both professional and advanced amateur musicians to perform full symphonic masterworks. Spring concerts feature high school soloists, winners of the CSO high-school concerto competition. Managed by a board chaired by Boyd Edwards and conducted by Dr. Mark Emile and Dr. Ghyas Zeidieh, CSO rehearses and performs at Utah State University, offering USU credit for participants. CSO fulfills the need for high-level symphonic music, reaching tens of thousands of residents and visitors.
In Fall 2023, CSO's growth to 120 musicians led to the creation of the Mount Logan Symphony (MLS) to cater to intermediate to early-advanced performers across diverse genres. Its inaugural concert on Nov. 15, 2024 was a success, with 52 musicians and an audience of 550. MLS, governed by a board chaired by Elizabeth Simmons and conducted by Dr. Ghyas Zeidieh, rehearses at Mount Logan Middle School, performs two concerts annually, and offers USU credit to participants, providing family-friendly symphonic repertoire in a relaxed setting.
The Cache Valley New Horizons Orchestra (NHO), established in Fall 2014, offers orchestral experiences for beginner to intermediate string players, focusing on enhancing musical skills and quality of life for senior adults. It welcomes those new to music and those returning after a hiatus, including former school music program participants. With 45 members, NHO rehearses at the Bullen Center in downtown Logan and performs five concerts annually, including a joint performance with the Cache Valley Good Times Marching Band. Directed by Patty Bartholomew and Janice McAllister, NHO arranges music for various skill levels, associated with the New Horizons International Music Association. NHO provides fulfilling musical experiences, with musicians sharing personal stories during performances, offering delightful concerts to Cache Valley audiences.
The Cache Valley Good Times Marching Band (CVGTMB) caters to adult amateurs, focusing on marches, Americana, and fun, accessible music. Now in its fifth year, CVGTMB performs eight times annually, providing entertainment at various events including Logan's summer concert series, Summerfest Arts Faire, July 24 parade, and Santa parade. CVGTMB also performs at local high schools and rest homes, offering engaging musical opportunities to over 50 musicians. Governed by a board including John Edwards, Alan Edwards, and Natalie Tippetts, and conducted by John and Alan Edwards, CVGTMB fulfills a unique role in Cache Valley, offering enjoyable performances for audiences and musicians alike.
